John Hayes was born on 12 August 1917 to William and Mary Hayes. In 1939 he was living with his widowed mother in Danywern Drive, and was a certified accountant working as senior audit clerk.

John served as a Pilot Officer with No. 1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit. On 17th October 1942 he was the nagivator/observer in De Havilland Mosquito No. W4058 on a mission to Norway. The aircraft failed to return and both John and his pilot, Flight Lieutenant Donald Higson were killed. They are buried together in Oslo Western Civil Cemetery.
